The piles of snow found on the inside could be a reference to the film "Krampus", or because David and his mother were moving, so she was in a rush and didn't bother to close the windows.
The furnace monster, Hons, could be a reference from the film "Home Alone", where Kevin was in the basement thinking the furnace might be alive despite reality.The player knows it is near with visual and audible effects the fuzzing of the screen, David sniffing heavily, or a strange whispering voice. It is usually looking around the corner with its yellow eyes. The Shadow starts showing up just after he finds his first toy and goes downstairs.
